outlet burned but breaker did not trip

I baught a 20A breaker, installed it in an empty slot in the breaker panel. Then I ran a 12-2 cable to an outlet installed in an attached garage. I was running a heater then about 2 hours or so, it went out and the wires in the outlet had burned! Why? Wouldn't the breaker had tripped first? Thanks in advance for any insight!

How many amps does the heater draw. Is the heater 120 volts. What brand panel do you have? What make and model number breaker did you buy?

Wow.....I see Ray has a few questions.

If the wiring burned at the receptacle then it was improperly attached. Either the screws weren't tightened or the #12 wire was forced into the #14 only stabs on the back of the receptacle.

Breakers trip because of overload or a short circuit, you had neither. You had a loose connection that got hot and burned the wires and that will not trip a breaker till you have a fire that eventually causes a short circuit.

I assume they were either backstabbed or if attached to the screw terminals, not enough insulation was removed.
