Quick question about plugs

Hi, I bought a used recliner from Craigslist that has a vibrating function, but was missing the plug. The plug jack said "12v, 600mah". I bought a universal plug off Amazon and made sure it was set on 12v.
Amazon.com: Hosa Cable ACD477 Universal AC Power Supply: Musical Instruments

After finding the right sized plug, when I touch the tip of the plug to the tip of the jack, it would work. But when I plug it all the way in, it would stop working. I bought 2 different universal plugs and it happened to both, so I know it's not the plugs.

What would cause this? Is there an easy fix?

Thx,
--Paul.

It appears that a lot of people who purchased this item had problems with the tips on the plugs. You might take a close look at the tips and see if they are loose and can be tightened.

I don't think it's the plug itself - I tried 2 different universal plugs from 2 different brands, they both did the same thing. Is this a common issue with electronics? It works when you barely touch the tip, but not when you fully plug it in? If so, any easy fixes?

I've had good luck buying and using power supplies and separate tips from Radio Shack. I've always taken the appliance in and let them do the matching up.

I'm assuming your unit uses the coaxial plug system like in the pic below.

There are several different sizes of the outside shell and several different sizes of the center pin. The usual problem is that the plug has too big a center hole.

At one time the shack carried an assortment pack of those plugs. I would try to purchase some replacement ones from there like Nash recommended.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look and see what I can find with Radioshack, or try different sizes from the universal plugs. Unfortunately, the appliance is a recliner with a vibrating function, so I can't just take it to radioshack. I bought it with a recliner, but just thought I'd try getting the vibration to work.
