need help wiring "keyless plastic ceiling lampholder"

I just bought my first house, the basement is unfinished and has only one light at the bottom of the stairs, but it looks like there are 3 boxes that can have a fixture installed, I bought 2 basic "keyless plastic ceiling lamp holders" I wired the first one like the guy said to and when I turned the breaker back on the light was on without the switch being on, he said to put both white and both black on, I have a picture of what wires I have to work with, any help will be much appreciated, I can post any other pictures if someone tells me what I need to take one of to help.

Most likely the red is the switched hot so use that and the white neutral.

Also - should have a wire nut on the bare copper grounding wires. Just twisting them together is not enough.

If you find the red wire is not switched either, go back to hardware store and buy pull chain porcelain (or plastic) fixtures.

Unless wiring goes under some drywall should be able to follow wires back to source. If a switch open it and take picture of wires.
