A garage door opener malfunction?

First, I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this, but couldn't a forum to fit my issue.

I pulled my van into my garage. Opened the rear hatch and took out my groceries. I went into the house through the interior door and on the way hit the garage door button to close garage door. Before I could react, the garage door came down on my open tail gate and ruined my garage door and scratching my van lift gate.

My question is this: Isn't the garage door supposed to reverse direction when it hits something?

Thanks

Yes it is, but when was the last time it was checked and adjusted? GDO manuals call for a test every 6 months IIRC. And it's possible it caught on something on the door (handle, plate, emblem) and caused it to drag and damage the door and hatch more than if it had just squashed straight down on a bike or bucket.
