Outdoor light stopped working

The porch light out front suddenly stopped working. Swapping out light bulbs did not work, so I swapped out the light fixture itself as I had a spare but that did not resolve the issue either. I tested the line at the fixture with a multimeter and the voltage seemed to keep jumping around, never really settling on a specific value. That's as far as I've gotten and was wondering if I need to check the wiring at the switch or beyond or what else I should investigate?

Yes, you need to check the switch. That is the other half of the light circuit. Try connecting the two wires on the switch together with a wire nut.

If I connect the wires and the light stays on then the switch is faulty?

After looking at the switch I think the problem lay in the way the wires were connected to the switch, 2 wires on one terminal may have caused a loose connection? I pig-tailed the two wires together and connected to switch with a single wire and both switch and light work fine now. Thanks everybody.

Good job. You found a worst practice connection and changed it to a best practice connection.

Thanks ray, ask enough questions over time and you're bound to learn a few things from the experts like yourself.
