bottom half of outlet does not work

I am trying to help my girlfriend with the outlets in her house built in like 1920. She has 4 or 5 outlets where the top part is live...but the bottom half is dead. Where should I start? There does not appear to be any tripped breakers... but aside from the newer breaker box there is alos an old fuse box that takes those old ceramic fuses... I dont even know if that one is really working either. Any ideas for a newbie?
Thanks,
Brett

It's possible that half the outlet is switched so you could turn a table lamp on/off from a wall switch. It's also possible that the outlet is bad and should be replaced.

Open the receptacle and check if the tab is intact on the brass side of the receptacle.

Also tell us how many wires are connected, and where they're connected, on each receptacle. Describe the wire color and the terminal color.
