Power inverter for sump pump

Just installed a Zoeller N53 sump pump, and as a backup situation in case of power failure I was thinking about getting a power inverter to run from my car.

Zoeller N53 - N53 - 1/3 HP Cast Iron Submersible Sump Pump (Non-Automatic)
Motor Amps: 9.6 (25.9 Start) Amps

volts * amps = watts
120 * 25 = 3,000 watts

Would I need a 3,000 watt inverter to power this pump?

One about half that size will run it once it's started. Check the specs on the inverters you look at to see if they can handle the startup draw for the few seconds it lasts.

Welcome to the forums

There may be a little trial and error required to find an inverter that works correctly for your sump pump. Make sure wherever you purchase it from it can be returned. You will probably need a 1000 or 1500 watt inverter.

Here's an informative thread from the forums on inverters and their use.

Consumer Reports mentioned Power Bright inverters from Sears/Walmart were up to the task.

Or buy a battery powered backup sump pump. Might be cheaper then an inverter.
