Does power come in at the switch or the ceiling? How did you wire it?

wiring a ceiling fan

there are 4 wires coming from the ceiling 1 for the light switch, one for the fan switch the neutral and the ground. i connected the wire marked motor to the fan switch, the one marked light to the other switch, then i connected the neutral to the white wire and then connected the green ground wire coming from the ceiling fan to the bare wire coming from the ceiling. now they both work by themselves but if i turn on the lights the fan stops

there are 4 wires coming from the ceiling 1 for the light switch, one for the fan switch the neutral and the ground.
So you have only a 3-conductor cable (red, black, white +ground) at the light. No other cables.

If the above is correct then at the switch you should have a 3-conductor cable from the ceiling box and a 2-conductor cable that brings power in. If the above satements are corect then at the switch you should have:
  • The two whites connected only to each other.
  • Two pigtails connected to the 2-conductor cable black.
  • One pigtail to each switch.
  • 3-conductor black to remaining screw on one switch.
  • Red to remaining screw on other switch.
Is that what you have?

coming from the ceiling there are 4 the bare ground wire, the black one for the fan, a blue one for the light and a white one for neutral. now from the ceiling fan there are 3 one for the fan(motor) one for the light and one for neutral. now the mounting post has a green wire which I'm assuming is for ground. as i explained before. the fan comes on and the light comes on by themselves, but if i have the fan on and turn on the light the fan turns off. where did i go wrong.

Ground wires aren't relative to function, only safety, so you don't need to mention those. Just connect altogether and to the box if metal. At the fan the black goes to black. Red goes to blue. White goes to white. Is that how you connected it?
