Recessed remodel light won't work when ground is connected

Fixture: Utilitech 3-inch Standard Remodel Recessed Light

Wiring three of these in a series in side a 6-inch high soffit I built under some high cabinetry.

Home built 1980's, standard wiring setup. This should be straight forward, I have done it a hundred times, but...

Lights 1 and 3 in the series work great. Light 2 works when hot and neutral are wired up, but shuts off when I wire up the grounds.

Fixture has a filament ground attached to the light housing, which I am wiring in with the two copper grounds from the romex.

Any ideas?

Probably something wrong with the factory wiring on fixture number two. These things ARE made in China to sell in the US cheaply.
