Door Bell Wiring. Please help
Ok I bought my house last year and there is a front and rear door bell button however the people who lived there previous took the bell/chime unit off the wall. I dont know what was previously there. However I have:
One Single red wire
two twisted white wires
two twisted black wires
When I use my multi meter I get a reading of approx
21 volts from red to white
90 volts from red to black
120 volts from black to white

None of that is the low voltage part of doorbell (chime) wiring. Looks more like wall sconce wiring. If you used a digital multimeter that would explain the 21v and probably 90v reading. Why do you think there was a door chime there?

Low voltage wiring for a door chime would typically be much thinner. That looks like wiring for a light fixture.

Thanks for the replies, the real estate agent said it prob was because there is absolutely no where else in the house that has the circuits for a door bell this is smack in the middle of the second floor hall. Guess maybe the previous owner sealed it up in a wall somewhere. Guess I'll keep looking or run new wires.

That box needs a cover plate or a fixture. Also based on the presence of a red wire there is probably a switch somewhere for that box.
Well since that isn't a circuit for a chime it shows he doesn't know enough to recognize one and the part about nowhere else lacks credibility at best. No chime police enforcing the location of chimes. Why do you think there was a door chime. Is there a chime button at the front door.

Since you have both front and rear door buttons, try looking in the basement for the transformer and low voltage wiring to both doors. You should be able to trace wiring in the direction of the old chime and get an idea where to look. I doubt the chime would be on the second floor, more likely on the first floor in a hallway or at the base of the stairs.
