Dimmer Switch

Hello, I am trying to install a dimmer switch in my dining room. When I took off the face plate I noticed that their are the wires from a wall outlet connected. Can I still install a dimmer switch and if so how? Thanks

The dimmer should connect to the wiring on the old switch. Do not make any changes to any other wiring in the switch box.

How many and what colors are connected to the switch?

Connect the dimmer switch to the same wires the old switch was connected to. Are you replacing an on/off switch or a 3-way switch?

If that switch controls the receptacle, you may NOT use a dimmer on it. Only the light part.

Adding outlet to Switch

I have a switch with screws on the one side nothing on the other. Two wires, black and white come to these screws. One of them is hot i.e. has current even when switch is OFF. How can I add an outlet by taking current from this switch. Would this outlet have power when the above mentioned switch is off i.e. one of the wires does not have current. Thanks all.Read More

Soldered Connection - old wiring

House is almost 60 y.o. Wired with TW wire. Sometimes when I go to swap an outlet, I find soldered connections capped with an old style nut and taped over with fabric type electrical tape. If I am forced to re-pigtail, I have a mess between tape residue and the soldered connection and I am hesitant to seperate everything and resplice.... Im worried I may break insulation or a wire. Should I be remaking these old connections as I go or leave them be? Besides rewire, how should I approach this? Is this stuff to old to work with?Read More
