What is the difference in an outdoor load center that is 3r rated vs one that is listed as rainproof?

No difference. Nema 3R is a weatherproof enclosure that is rainproof.

In addition, the NEMA3R (raintight) enclosure generally has a raintight cover that hinges at the top and sometimes will have a hub opening at the top that usually comes with a weatherproof closure plate. NEMA3R enclosures will have no other openings on the top and usually have no knockouts on the sides, but probably will have some knockouts on the bottom. A NEMA 3R enclosure is not gasketed, dustproof or waterproof, just raintight.

Hallway mystery

I live in a 1400 sq ft framed home built in 1969. Have lived here for 11 years. We have a short hallway with 2 bedrooms at the end... one on each side of the hall. The hallway has one electrical outlet and one light switch... not connected to each other. We have always had a small night light plugged into the hallway outlet and it has always remained on, until a few weeks ago. I replaced the night light the new one did not work. However, both night lights worked when I tried them in other outlets. I checked the outlet with a voltmeter and it showed no juice. I replaced the receptacle with a new one even though the wires still showed no juice. The breakers are normal and none had tripped. After weeks of wonder and curiosity, by chance, we identified a mystery... in one of the two bedrooms there is a wall electrical outlet about 3 feet below the bedroom light switch. The two are not connected. Whenever we plugged anything into that wall receptacle... the hallway night light would come on, and I could run vacuums and other things from the hallway receptacle. As soon as we unplugged whatever we had plugged into the bedroom receptacle, the hallway receptacle goes dead again. I am a pretty fair handyman and can do or fix most anything, but electrical is easily my weakest link. Any suggestions?Read More

My wife was using an iron in an outlet in my family room that is on a 15A circuit when all the sudden it went dead along with the lights in the room and adjacent garage. I checked the breaker and reset it but still no power to the outlet or lights but the rest of the outlets on the circuit were good. I went ahead and replaced the outlet and the breaker thinking that one of them could be bad and the problem persisted. I have found that the outlet now has an open neutral leg with respect to ground and I assume this is why the lights aren't working because that are down circuit from the outlet. There is no GFI on this circuit. I have no idea what could have happened and short of pulling the wire out of the wall don't know what to do. Any ideas would be great.Read More
