Another two light to one switch question

I'm working on wiring two lights from one switch in my detached garage. The power comes in below the switch. It is on a 20amp breaker and I'm using 12-2 romex. The trick is that one light is located to the right of the switch and the other is to the left so I don't really want to connect switch to light1 to light2. I searched the forums but couldn't find an answer for this specific setup.

What is the best way to proceed? Do I need a second junction box above the wall?

I am also considering installing a 2 gang box instead and having one switch for each fixture, which seems simpler.

If you didn't want to run the cable from light #2 back to light #1 then you could bring it directly to the switch box.

It would certainly be easy enough to remove the single gang box and replace it with a two gang box if you really wanted two switches at that location.
