Wire Tracing

I have a circuit that has the return wire interrupted somewhere between a wall outlet and the junction box. I am not sure where all the outlets are, one is in the garage and one is in the upstairs bathroom. Do electricians have a tool that will allow them to follow a wire behind the walls?

Thanks,

There are tools called a Fox and Hound that can trace wires.

Based on your description I suspect you have a tripped GFI. Look in the garage, basement, outside or a bath or powder room. I also suspect the house was built in the 80's.

Yes, and there are others besides the tone generator PCboss mentioned. But first, what do you mean when you refer to a "return wire"?
