Maximimum Lenght of Wire for 220 V hookup

I want to move our electrical outlet for our dryer up about 3feet on the wall (previously, it was a floor level).
I am curious what is the recommended wire size / AND maximum length of wire that should be run from the circuit breaker box.

Use the same size wire as is there now (you'll need to look). If you need to splice in more wire, keep the junction box permanently accessible. There is no limit on length of wire, but as the wire gets longer you sometimes need to increase the wire size (not for safety reasons, but to avoid voltage drop). But a 3-foot increase is negligible (actually, your 3-foot change may reduce the length -- have you looked?).
