Spliting to two groups of lighting in basement help

In my basement I have two 4 foot fluorescent lights. I'm replacing them with 8 led recessed lights. I have a switch at the top of the stairs which turns on both lights (fluorescents) currently. This is where I'm lost. I want to split the 8 lights into 2 sets, four each. At the top of the stairs I want to be able turn, both of them on with one switch. Then once I get down stairs be able to dim one set of four and or turn off or dim the other four. My question is if I put a three way at the top of the stairs and two three way dimmer switches sharing the power from the switch at the top of the stairs is that possible or do I need two three way switches at the top as well?

You are going to need two switches at the top also.
