install sconce on plaster wall covered with fabric
I'm doing restoration work on an old home and I have a room that has walls covered in fabric (actual fabric, not wallpaper). I will be mounting a series of 6 wall sconces in this room over pancake boxes. Should the pancakes have a cover on them (with a hole to run wire through) to protect wiring as much as possible from contact with the fabric? I intend to cut opening in the fabric, but sconces will not cover entire pancake so there will be fabric overlapping pancake opening.

Original was knob and tube with wire plastered around and only a small hole (large enough only to run the wire) in the fabric. Sconces were mounted on fabric directly over wires and fixtures were screwed right into plaster. Fixtures will be mounted similarly, I'm just concerned about open pancake covered with fabric.

You need to use a box behind the sconce. It doesn't matter what was done. You need to do it correctly this time.
