Over Half of the upstairs outlets stopped working

I would start additional testing in the room that is closest to the downstairs circuit box. When they run wires they usually run the lead wire to the closest room, then run other wires from there. In that room I would open up the wall switch and pull the wires forward enough to touch the white with one tip of the power tester and the black with the other end. If the power tester light glows, then the power is making it to that switch. Then I would continue until I had tested all of the upstairs switches, or found the problem. Also, in each switch box I would look for black burned wires or connectors. And, I would make sure all connections are tight.

I don't know why you are afraid to test the junction boxes. If you insist on working upstairs only, start on the wall where the BX cables from the junction boxes are in the cellar. For example, if the BX cable leaves the junction box & goes up the south wall, that's where I would start
