Magnetic motor starter/on-off control wiring

Hi All,

I have a drill press with a mag starter and a momentary start/stop pushbutton station. Pretty common setup, everything works fine, but I want to add a foot switch to it. The foot switch is a maintained one, press on/press off. When wired in parallel with the pushbottons, it energizes the coil and turns the motor on. But that also backfeeds the pushbutton switch and closes the start button, so to switch everything off, I now have to push on the foot switch and the stop button - kind of defeats the purpose of having a foot switch. Is there a way to separate these controls in the starter, so one does not affect the other? Seems like the current that drives the coil will always activate the pushbutton switch.. or am I missing something? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

What did you want to happen with the foot switch..... push it once and it's running, push again it stops..... or runs only while holding the switch down.

Motor Control

You need to install a switch to take the Aux contact out of the circuit when you use the foot switch. With the momentary start/stop, the aux contact holds the circuit closed when you release the start button, so even if you pushed the armature in by hand to start the motor, when the mag closes, the aux contact will close and hold so power remains to the coil. Add a selector switch so you can always use the stop button along with the foot switch but not the start button. Take the power through the stop button then to your selector switch where it selects either the start button or the foot switch.

Brilliant idea, bahtah. Thank you. I will cut in a simple 3 position toggle or rocker switch on the side of the starter. Will report back with the results.
