One outlet cold; rest on circuit work just fine?!

Put in a new vanity/countertop/backsplash this weekend. In order to mount the backsplash I needed to relocate one of the outlets about 9 inches--was able to do so without incident. Now I'm trying to install the new outlet and there's no power. All of the other outlets/switches on the circuit work just fine; this particular outlet, however, is cold. What's going on?

Important fact: When my wife and I were placing the countertop, we bumped the old outlet which was loose in the old metal box and it sparked. I can't say for sure whether or not it ever worked after that--didn't think twice about it.

Is it possible to short-out a wire? What could this be? Please help!

If the hot hit an grounded metal box there is a good chance you tripped the breaker or a gfi ahead of that receptacle.

It did trip the breaker--which I reset. All of the other outlets on the circuit work just fine. There is one GFI outlet on the circuit--could that still be working but still not be sending current on to the problem receptacle? Thanks for responding!

  • How did you move it 9"?
  • Was there enough slack in the cable(s)?
  • How many cables?
  • If multiple cables were they all 2-conductor (black, white, ground)?
  • How did you wire it? Did you connect to the screws if not a GFCI?
