Old Damaged Wires

Hi folks,

I had to replace some drywall and noticed a wire underneath is damaged (see pics).

House is from the sixties, but has been rewired with new Romex, except this circuit. Wire seems to be old Romex (cloth covered) and has the marking "HATFLEX NM 14/2". Only the cloth is partially teared-up.

Should I be worried about this? I was considering putting some electrical tape over the damaged sections. Is this ok? What other alternatives do I have?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums! Sadly, the circuit should be replaced. The damage you see appears ro be from rodents, so what you CAN'T see may be worse. Since you have access, I would see about replacing it. Wrapping it with electrical tape is not a permanent solution.

Unfortunately replacing the whole circuit is not possible now, as it stretches into the belly of the house. Would replacing just a section be an option? How should I go about doing it?

Replacing it would require adding accessible junction boxes are both ends and replacing the cable between the boxes.
