sizing the plaster ring?

i have some questions about plaster rings. i looked at 1/2'' plaster rings but they seemed like they were more for 1/4'' drywall then for 1/2'' drywall. should i use a 5/8'' plaster ring for 1/2'' drywall to make the ring and drywall flush? or should i use an adjustable plaster ring? last is it ok for the box to be flush with the wood stud while the plaster ring sticks out by its own thickness or should the box be recessed by the thickness of the plaster ring so that the plaster ring is flush with the stud? i mean the thin part not the main thickness of the plaster ring but the part that screws to the box. last does the drywall look like its butting out around plaster rings or does it adjust and sink in over time?
