universal box fit?

Are all 4" boxes universal? Meaning can I replace an octagon 4x1 1/2 with a 4x4 with no alteration to the conduits feeding it? Are the knockouts the same?

Depends on the box, but in most cases you can get ones with the KO's you need on each side.
That said, a 4"x4"x 1 1/2" box is larger then a octagon box, which I believe is only 3 1/2". You might need to shorten some conduit(s) if they connect opposite sides.

This octo box has two 3/4 knockouts used on either side. Another two 1/2 knockout on the other two side (that's all 4 total sides. Plus one 1/2" on the top.

If the Octo box is truly 4" you should have no problem finding a 4"x4" box with that configuration. 4"x4" square will have 3 KO's on each side and 5 on the back. Some being combo 1/2" and 3/4" KOs

Obviously they aren't the same because the square box has a lot more KOs, but the center KO on each side of a square box might line up with the KOs on an octagon box. You'd have to compare and measure them to be sure.
