Light switch added

Hello friends,
I just installed new recessed ceiling lights in my kitchen....in addition to an already existing standard ceiling light. I added a 2 gang switch box and the second switch. The new recessed lights didn't work as originally wired. So I rewired the switches, thinking I had it. Now, the added ceiling lights (with new switch) still doesn't work, and the original ceiling light won't turn off (unless I hit the breaker of course).
The second time, I wire nutted the two black power lines with two short leads (to the switches), same with the two common lines, then all the grounds to the metal box.

So how do I wire this ? Again, one 12-2 coming into the box from the breaker, the other 12-2 going out to the new recessed ceiling lights...that don't work.

Thank you so much for your guidance.....

If you only had one 12-2 to begin with you never had power at the switch box for the new light. You only had a switch loop from the existing light not a cable from the breaker box.

Correct, but can't I connect the second switch with power from the main 12-2 power line, by jumping power from the first switch? Thanks Ray

You don't have a neutral. The white wire on the original switch isn't a neutral. No neutral no power for the new light.
