Unhappy Help! Main in panel suddenly dead

Moderately knowledgeable electrician here. I was checking out some lights in an old barn for my LL, and immediately found they were tied to a space heater. I turned off the circuit, opened the j-box, it appears the neutral for the lights is going straight to the panel, and the black is spliced to a switch in a 3 gang. The j-box is a mess, but no loose splices. I turned the circuit on again, everything worked. Turned off the circuit, and now the whole panel is dead. I've tested my tester, just to make sure, and the main is inexplicably off. It seems to be fed from an old GE panel for a pool (pump, etc). Wtf? Please advise.

Is that panel dead also? What are you using to test. How are you testing (what to what)? Can you post pictures of these panels with the cover removed? http://www.doityourself.com/forum/li...-pictures.html

You seem to think that is wrong or am I misunderstanding?
