ground rod

I need another ground rod for a solar system, small. I decided to put in another one cause the house rod is 40 ft away. But I wasnt going to spend money on it. So I decided to bury a 6 ft rebar horizontally about 26 inches down in our hard packed soil. Very hard.
But I have in my junkpile some old pipe galvanized that I find in the woods here and there all bent up but scrap is always useful. Would galvanized pipe 1 inch from 40 years ago be ok for this use??
It wont rust anyway,no?????I dont want to buy anything and it is not possible to dig any deeper...

A job worth doing is worth doing correctly. If you don't want to do it correctly why do it at all?

Ground rods are 8' long and come in 1/2" and 5/8" in brass or galvanized. Least expensive (galvanized) will run about $9 up to about $12 for brass. Strapping??? Not sure about that shortcut. Do it right, do it once.

I've never seen a 4 foot ground rod. The most common ground rods are copper clad steel and come in 1/2" and 5/8" diameters, 8 and 10 feet long. Ground rods are also available in 3/4" and 1" diameters, but are rare. I haven't seen a galvanized ground rod in close to 20 years.

The two electrodes will need to be bonded together.
