4 square box with round mudring for junction at wall light and ceiling light

Hi. I need to join some cables at a wall sconce/light location and maybe a ceiling light location. I want to use a 4 inch or 4-11/16 box with a round mudring. If the sconce/wall light canopy will cover the mudring is it against code not to put drywall over the mudring?

Up to, but not inside the mud ring. That is why it is called a mud ring. Have it sit flush to face with mud smoothing it out. The offset is 1/2"+-

It sounds like you are planning to flush mount a square box.

How will you hold the box in the wall ?
If you cut a square hole just the size of the box.... how will you get your cables into the box ?
The fixture would have to be gigantic to hide a 4-11/16" box.

The box will be in the wall and mounted to a stud. The mudring will be flush with the drywall as usually done. The drywall is already up and I have a square hole there already. I was wondering if I had to add drywall up to the round area of the mudring.
