Will this type of clip work for a round ceiling box or is it meant for just rectangle wall boxes?

It's not really round or square.... round boxes don't have ears and will fall back into the wall/ceiling.

If you use that box and consider where the sheetrock ends...... the madison bars will cover over the wiring holes.

Guess you'd have to put a Romex clamp in the knockout.

Why not just use an old work box I guess is the question? I used 4 in my garage, easy peasy.

Maybe and maybe not, what kind of fixture weight will be attached to it.

They are pre old work box. An old DIY book of mine shows how to make them from tin cans. (but the tin plated steel in cans then was a thicker gauge then they usually use now).
