install LED dimmer

There is an existing dimmer connected to 2 x 50W halogen bulbs.
I would like to replace them with LEDs but I believe this needs an LED dimmer.
What's the difference in the dimmers and can I just replace the existing light bulbs with an LED type or do I need to replace the light holder as well?

The light holders/sockets should be fine.

Older dimmers, especially incandescent only ones, use the current/wattage that the lamp draws as part of the circuit. LED's only draw several watts and it's not enough for the dimmer to function correctly. You can try LED's on your current dimmer to see what happens but more than likely you'll need to change out the dimmer.

It's recessed lighting also - they seem to sell different sockets in the hardware store for that?

Electrical device only draw the amount of current they need.
Edison base LED bulbs are common. Example: Dimmable 60 Watt Replacement LED Bulb - Bright LED Replacement Bulb Uses 6 Watts, Edison Base, Bright Natural White Color - Led Household Light Bulbs - Amazon.com
Also can light adapters that just screw in. Example: CREE CR6-625L, 6 Inch LED Downlight, Edison Base, Energy Star | EarthLED.com

Keep in mind, some LED A-Lamps are dimmable and some are not. If the LED A-Lamp is dimmable it is usually prominently marked on the outside of the packaging. You may destroy a non-dimmable A-Lamp if you try to dim it.
