switches
i am replacing a ceiling light with a ceiling fan. The light had a dimmer switch. The fan has a remote control. The existing dimmer switch says for incandescent lights only. There are three sets of wires entering the switch box. Do I need a special switch and how do I wire the switch?

What do you mean 3 sets of wires ,is this light switched from 2 locations? If not and only one switch is involved and you are just replacing the dimmer, shut the power off to that circuit, pull the dimmer out of the box and remove 1 wire at a time and connect it to the new switch, reinstall the new switch into the box.
Any single pole switch would be fine.

It is only switched at this box. The existing switch has three black wires connected to it. After wiring the fan I turned the power on with the existing switch still in place and the fan did not work but there was a humming noise in the fan.

Fans are not intended to work with dimers. When you put in the new switch be sure that the two house wires that are together stay together and are pigtailed to the new switch. Use the screws only on the new switch, not the backstabs.
