sealing an outdoor light fixture

I have a light fixture outside that has some gaps around the mounting base. You can see into the siding . Is silicon caulk appropriate for sealing that gap between the fixture and the siding? Or is a putty more appropriate?

I would use a caulk either a silicone or water based acrylic that's paintable.

I also suggest caulk, but leave a spot at the bottom of the base caulk free so that water can get out.

That may be a sign the fixture is improperly mounted and needs a siding box.
