Generator with 20 amp output going to 30 amp inlet
We just moved to a new house. We have a 5000 watt generator, and I am adding an inlet to our panel with panel interlock. I had not looked at the old cord before ordering inlet, and I ordered a 30 amp inlet which I have installed with a 30 amp DP breaker.
When I went to look at the old cord, it has 20 amp connectors on both ends. Is it OK to just take off the 20 amp female connector and replace with 30 amp? The cord is 10-4 as is the connection between inlet and panel.
I was thinking this should be OK as the generator can only put out a max of 20 amps. Or should I change breaker in panel to 20 amps also?
In our old house, we had a dedicated subpanel, and a 60 amp DP breaker withthe same generator all put in by our electrician. So I would thing that the 30 amp breaker we have in the new setup would not need to be downsized to a 20 amp, but I want to be sure.
Thanks
Dave

Just swap the end on the generator cord to the 30 amp, L14-30r.
The generator has breakers and can't put out more than 20 amps so the heavier gauge house wiring is not a problem.
No need to swap the interlock breaker either. Your wiring is all rated for 30 amps.
