Splice Fabric sheathed wire to Romex?

Is it okay to splice fabric sheathed wire to Romex? If so, is the size of the fabric sheathed cable marked anywhere? How do I determine what size Romex? What do I do with the ground wire?
Thanks!

You can not extend ungrounded cable because all new installations must meet current code which requires a ground. Based on your question and typical cloth NM the old cable does not contain a ground and can not be extended. You will need to run a new circuit from the breaker panel.

The gauge of the wire can be obtained by using a pair of strippers.

If your circuit is grounded you would run the same size as the existing circuit and splice in an accessible junction box.

Starting with an ungrounded fabric sheathed cable circuit and you decommissioned part of it from the breaker panel partway out, the orphaned rest of the circuit may be spliced onto the black and white of the new grounded Romex.
