What is correct wire size

I have an older Sears compressor that says the motor pulls 7.5 amps. Can you tell me what gauge wire I need to use to the plug?

Currently, it has about a 4 ft 14 gauge power cord. I want it to be longer. 14 gauge seems considerably large. I would think a 16 gauge would be adequate but wasn't sure about the startup current pull.

The current cord is a replacement so I have no idea what originally came on the unit and the manual does not state what it is.

Thanks,
Rut

The #14 seems like the appropriate size.

Depending on the length I, too, would use nothing less than #14. If more than 25 feet I would use nothing less than #12.
