Retro fitting home electrical with conduit

My house has had many dyi modifications over the years. Some of the wiring in the crawl space is laying on the ground. I would like to rewire these runs and I would like to know if I can use conduit in the crawl space but leave the romex to the outlets. In other words can I mix conduit and romex in one circuit? Or more specific should I?

I don't know why not as long as all metallic conduit and boxes are properly grounded.
