Tracing a wall switch

I've got a wall switch and no idea what it does. We bought this house and there's a specific, single switch that does something but we have no idea what. The one next to it turns on an outside outlet. How do I find out what it does?

What room is this in? Many to times there is a switched or half switched receptacle to provide lighting in the room.

it's in kind of a little transition between three rooms. The switch for the lights is on the other wall.

Does the switch say off and on or is it a three way?

OBTW, it's on/off. It is not a three way switch.
