Mystery Switch

I have a similar switch I would like to find out what it does. It is a standard (non 3-way) next to the front door at the base of the stairs. It is part of a 3 gang box, one of which is an outside light, another is hallway lights, and the mystery switch.

Plug something into to each half of the receptacles in the room and try the switch.

I already took the cover plates off the outlets and verified the tab was still intact.

Then the switch will operate both halves or someone forgot to break the tab and the switch is constantly overridden.

Do you have an outside post light or a box somewhere for future wiring of a post light?

Shot in the dark...

Turn it off and see if your furnace still runs.
I'm going to side with boss on this one though, probably a switched receptacle.
