Mystery Switch
I have a similar switch I would like to find out what it does. It is a standard (non 3-way) next to the front door at the base of the stairs. It is part of a 3 gang box, one of which is an outside light, another is hallway lights, and the mystery switch.

Then the switch will operate both halves or someone forgot to break the tab and the switch is constantly overridden.

Shot in the dark...
Turn it off and see if your furnace still runs.
I'm going to side with boss on this one though, probably a switched receptacle.
