Junction Box Question

Junction Box Question
I removed track lighting in the bathroom and noticed they just pulled the line through the ceiling without a junction box and screwed track directly to the drywall. When replacing the track lighting with the same style different color, do I need to add an old work box or reconnect as it was before? It just didn't seem right to me. So I am wondering if this was someone cutting corners or is this ok? Thank you for your assistance!

Welcome to the forums.
That is correct... you can run the NM cable directly into the starter end.... a box is not required.
It looks like they changed their starter end. It used to be small and sleek. Matched the track well. Now it's gotten a larger profile.
I would look around for the Halo starter end. Fits the same track and looks better.

Thank you and thanks for the heads up. I will check out that type of track. I agree it looks much nicer! It looks like the larger profile of what I took out allows for the power head to be put anywhere on the track.
This video shows someone installing the one with the larger box.

The NM cable connects directly to the starter ends I showed you.
The connection in that video, and in the picture below, allows you to feed the track from anywhere along its length. You'd use that connection if you had a box in the center of the ceiling and you wanted to feed the track from there. That midspan type connection system requires an electrical box in the ceiling.

Awesome! Thank you so much for your help. It looks like someone cut a corner then, now I just need to figure out if I want to move the line or cut a hole in the ceiling for the junction box.
Thanks again
