Help with receptacle wiring

i have a light switch. Turn it on, overhead lights go on. There is an AC outlet wired to it. It ONLY works if the switch is off. Two wires only to both switch (for overhead lights) and the AC outlet. Can i change something to get the ac outlet permanently on? Thx!

Welcome to the forums! You have a "through" wire on the switched side. What did you do to the wiring? Can you post a picture of the switch pulled from the box showing the wiring at the switch and inside the box. Power off, for sure.

I'm going to be installing six new LED cans in my living room. Hopefully this picture gives you a good idea of what I'm trying to do. The paper cutouts are my templates for cutouts. [ATTACH]45953[/ATTACH] However, I'm planning on removing the light from the ceiling fan, and hopefully I can use that existing power source to wire in my cans from the attic. I hope to run these lights off the existing switch at the door (pictured below). It's currently wired for an outdoor light on the right, a ceiling fan speed controller in the middle, and the ceiling light fan on the left. I'd like to hook up all the cans to one dimmer, which will take the position of the existing ceiling light switch on the left. Then I'd like a replacement fan speed controller in the middle, and then keep the outdoor light switch on the right. Also, I was hoping the cords running to the ceiling fan would be individual (one for the light, one for the fan), but it appears to be just one single white cable. Cost effective wiring for a switch on a long run.

I've been trying to figure out how to wire a switch to operate the lights at my front gate. I have constant power at the gate, which comes in on 260' of 12-2 copper from a sub panel. (I haven't laid the wire yet, so could possibly go up to 10-2 if you guys think it's needed.) My house is another 600' from the front gate. I simply cannot spend the kind of money that would be required to buy 880' feet of 2- or 4- or maybe 6-gauge for the entire circuit. It seems ridiculous for a single switch anyhow. What about a low voltage relay? If I wire the 120v at the gate into a transformer, I imagine that I could run 600' of 18 ga low voltage sprinkler wire from a relay at the gate to a switch in the house. What do you think? The 260' circuit of 12-2 from the panel to the gate powers an automatic gate opener, which requires very little amperage, I believe. The switch circuit will power eight 40-watt bulbs, so there is very little amperage required here, too.Read More
