Pool cover pump

Hello, I have an inground pool with a pool cover pump. The pump was working fine where now it will not. If I take the pump off the cover and out of the water, the pump will kick on for a few seconds (like it is suppose to) but if I put it back on the cover (into some water) the pump does not work and the gfi circuit pops. i also tried moving the pump to another outlet (also with a gfi) and same result

My first guess is a knick in the cord or cord sealant allowing some water in. Might be time for a new pump.

Usually what happens with a pool cover pump is that it gets dragged across the cover by its cord.(ask me how I know) Where the cord enters the units leaks water and causes a GFI trip.
