Socket wiring

I am changing out a few old sockets in the house and in my bedroom i have noticed that some of the sockets are wired with the black wire to the silver screws and white to the gold. Not all of them are wired this way but i am pretty sure that is backwards. All the sockets worked before and i didnt have any issues my wife just doesnt like the off white color of the sockets.
Is there a reason these wires would be switched other than somebody just ran them that way?

The black or red should be on the brass side.

You should make sure the whites are the neutrals and not the hots. If not it should be corrected.

Somebody installed them wrong. They should be be hot (black) to brass, neutral (white) to silver and bare/green to ground.
