Through wall metal electrical boxes - I found two...

I found in this house that was built in 1968 two "through wall" electrical boxes. I have heard of them but have never seen one.

Here is a picture.

It looks like a handy box but opens on both ends, it must be 5" deep from end to end as the 2X4 is 3.5" thick but the sheet rock has a gypsum layer then a hand applied brown coat so it's over an inch thick on each side. There are EMT conduits running into it. There is a receptacle on each side of this box.

Note the receptacles are not grounded. Now if I want to attach a ground screw to this box, how would you do it? Grounding clips would be the only way I would think. There is no "surface" to which I can tap a screw hole.

I think a ground clip is going to be your only option .

You certainly have some interesting stuff going on down there.

I've never actually seen them in use before.
