LED versus 12 volt bulb test light
I doing so automotive testing and have been using a 12V bulb for years.
I read recently that I should be using a LED test light instead to keep from damaging the automotive electronics.
Is this correct and could someone please explain why?

It all depends on what and where you are checking. For checking fuses...a standard light is ok. If you are looking for voltage drop in a circuit you would use a standard light.
If you are testing for voltage in any control circuit you'd want to use an LED test light.
An LED test light presents very little load to the circuit while an actual bulb is basically a dead short in a low current control circuit.
