pole barn

Have a pole barn w/concrete floor. Its 400' behind our home and would like to put power in it for lights and outlets for small tools and an air compressor (220). what size direct bury cable or wire would I need for say 50 amp service at best maybe less

If you use aluminum MFE (Mobile Home Feeder) you would be looking at 2/0-2/0-1-4.

is that direct bury cable I believe the code here is 18" deep not a problem to bury its all pasture land

It would be 24" if unprotected by conduit. Of course check to make sure.

Direct burial is 24". In conduit (PVC) it is 18". You might want to consider also burying a low voltage cable for internet/phone service. Bury that at about 12".
