wiring a floor outlet

I've installed a floor outlet and now need to connect to a power supply.
Under the house is an outlet into which the main furnace is plugged, yellow Romex in and out.
Can I run my floor outlet wires to this box? If so, would type NM-B, 14/2 white wire rating be sufficient?

No, code requires the central heating system be wired on a dedicated circuit. You would need to find power from another circuit or run a new one from the panel.

There is currently a fluorescent lighting fixture that is wired into this furnace box. Was that connected incorrectly? (not me, I bought the house this way).

BTW, thanks for the helpful reply!

Probably incorrect from a previous occupant, yes. If this is a much older home it may have been installed prior to the code going in effect.

FYI, yellow romex is almost always #12. If a circuit is wired from the panel with #12, the whole thing needs to be at least #12. You can "upsize", (e.g. add #12 to a #14 circuit), but you cannot "downsize" (e.g. add #14 on a #12 circuit).

Older #12 was also white. The color is not a reliable gauge of wire size.

This is a little off topic, but I think it needs to be mentioned here. The furnace really shouldn't be plugged in, but should be hardwired to a dedicated circuit. IF it is plugged in, as you say it is, the receptacle needs GFCI protection.
