Old Work Box Help

Back story isn't interesting... attached below is a picture of what I'm currently working with. I need a single gang box put back here and the drywall area is too large. Do I completely repair the area and re-cut for the box or just mount the box to the top side of the hole and repair below? Any other ideas? THANK YOU!

Since you have to repair the hole, I would suggest cutting the drywall to the stud in the picture, then install a remodel box like this which screws directly to the stud:

Arlington | ONE-BOX„ Non-Metallic Outlet Boxes

You can then repair the drywall around the box.
