Doorbell not working

My doorbell has suddenly stopped working. When someone presses the button next to the front door all it does is make a buzzing noise on the inside. I am trying to decide if it's the transformer or the unit that generates the chime. I'm a little inclined to think the latter. They sell separately in the home improvement stores.

Any thoughts?

Traditional doorbell systems are pretty simple. There is a transformer, button, bell and wiring connecting them together. Since you're hearing something when the button is pressed it sounds like the transformer and button are doing something so I'd check the bell/chime.

The plunger in the chime picks up grease from the air over time. It can be cleaned with lighter fluid. You can try that first.
