Converting Old Drill into Rock tumbler motor
OK so basically, my rock tumbler motors have been made from printer motors, but the jars im using just get to heavy. I took apart my old drill, 18v black and decker. I got a 19v ac/dc adapter from an old laptop, powers it perfectly.
Here is the problem, testing things to power the drill, I fried the Drill trigger, so now I need a new one, or at least a controller for the motor speed, as full power is going to tumble rocks too fast.
Im no pro at electrical things, but I am pretty sure all I need now is a 19v dc motor speed controller. Does anyone know what I need to look for, or can link me to a product that will work. I don't want to have to spend more than 10 dollars for the controller.
Or maybe there is other ways to control the speed, like a fan control knob from hardware stores? To avoid ordering online, etc
Thanks

A drill motor is designed for a large amount of power over a short period of time.
It would not stand up to running for as many days as it takes for all of the stages of rock tumbling.
You will have to find a non-brush type motor that is better suited for continuous running.
You would do well to update your profile to include your location.
If you are in the US Harbor Freight offers a perfectly serviceable rock tumbler for about $40.00 and often goes on sale for $39.00.
I have this one and it has about 30 days of running time with the same belt and it includes 6 spare belts.

You can use a pulse width modulated controller.
Shop around there are bargains to be found.... especially from some of the Asian suppliers.

I made a tumbler from shafts/rollers/bearings and motor from a discarded IBM Selectric typewriter. If you can find one, you won't find better quality parts anywhere. For the speed reduction I used pulleys & belts from a floor-standing humidifier.
