Terminating wires

.. when I disconnect a cable from fixtures and want to just terminate it in a stand alone electrical box....I simply cut the wires clean and screw on the wire nut without stripping the insulation.

Should I strip the insulation before screwing on the wire nut or should I maybe just use insulation tape instead ?

This would be part of an active circuit....I am just unable to trace the cable back to the previous box.

Thanks!

Wire nuts are fine. The wire is not required to be stripped either.
