Question Panel board is hot

I have a friend who owns a storage place for fish. He has near 50 freezers up there. He called me and said that he has recently changed all wires and installed a new panel board. Suddenly after the new installation the panel board got hot. Why is that? Any suggestions?

We would need far more information to do more then make an uneducated guess.

We'll need to know the amperage of the feed, the size of wire making the feed, the size of the main breaker and all the individual breakers, the size of wire in the cables leaving the box to the individual receptacles and lights and how much load he has. 50 freezers will consume a bunch of power at one time.

Guess

That what I am asking for...a guess. The same like you, I did not see it and not going to... I am just wondering what can cause such problem. What possibly it could be?

If everything is to code, a big if; check the screws for proper torque on the big wires.

Better yet, take an IR thermogun and measure exactly what is hot, without have to touch anything.

If you want an uneducated guess, I would say he has too small conductors leaving the box for the overcurrent protection devices installed, and the amperage used is heating up the conductors. He will have a fire soon, and the investigators can tell where the problem was.

I would suspect a high resistance connection.
